How to Make the Buena Vista of San Francisco Authentic Irish Coffee

The world-famous Buena Vista, on Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco, pioneered Irish Coffee in 1952. It took them many months to perfect this recipe, which is still being used today. Be sure to visit the Buena Vista (www.buenavista.com) whenever you are in San Francisco!

Ingredients (per serving):

  • 3-5 oz. Kirkland Signature or San Francisco Bay Gourmet Coffee Beans, made to your taste.
  • 1 oz. Irish Whisky
  • 1-2 tsp. Sugar
  • 1 oz. Heavy cream
  • 6-8 ounce Coffee mug or glass mug with handle
  • Hot water to warm mug.

Making Coffee

  1. Use fresh, cold water, or bottled drinking water.
  2. Use proper grind – drip filter coffee grounds should look like sand.
  3. Use 2 rounded tablespoons of coffee per 6 oz. serving; adjust to taste.
  4. Best methods are drip filter, vacuum, French press, and espresso.

Irish Coffee

  1. Add hot water to mug and warm.
  2. In a bowl, whip or froth the cream lightly with a whip or eggbeater. It should still be pourable.
  3. Empty water from the mug, and add coffee and sugar.
  4. Stir to dissolve sugar.
  5. Add Irish Whisky and stir.
  6. Hold a spoon upside down over top of mug.
  7. Slowly pour cream over inverted spoon, allowing it to float onto top of the coffee.
  8. Do not stir — sip the drink through the cream.
